Lets look at each Step
The entire
process takes less than 15 minutes per eye.
Talk about 30 minutes or less for the start of new vision,
better than
pizza delivery. And it's Pain FREE !!!
Step 1:
After your eye has been numbed with "eye drop" anesthesia,
an instrument known as an eyelid speculum will be positioned to hold your
eyelids open. You will remain awake and comfortable throughout the
procedure. You will be able to listen to and communicate with the
doctor and technician during the entire procedure.
Step 2:
A small suction ring will be placed around the cornea and
serves as a platform for the microkeratome, an instrument used to separate the
surface layers of the cornea.
Step 3
The microkeratome is put into place,
the surface layer of the cornea is
separated, and the corneal flap is folded
back.
Step 4:
You
will be asked to look at a red blinking target light while the laser removes
a predetermined amount of tissue from the inner cornea to correct the
individual's refractive error. A clicking sound will be heard as each
microscopic layer of tissue is removed. The cornea is made flatter to
treat nearsightedness, steeper to treat farsightedness and/or more spherical
to correct astigmatism. This process will last from seconds to
minutes, depending on the amount of correction necessary.
Step 5
The corneal is then placed back into its original position, allowed to dry
for a few minutes, where it bonds without the need for stitches.
Step 6:
The microkeratome and eyelid speculum are removed,
additional eye drops are placed in your eye, and your eye will be shielded for
protection by a clear plastic covering. Your vision will probably be a
little blurry at first so have someone drive you home and relax for the rest of
the day.
Step 7:
Follow-up visits will be scheduled beginning the day after the procedure.
Additional visits to closely monitor your healing and to evaluate
your recovery process will be scheduled depending on your situation.
