CLE (Clear Lens Extraction)

CLE, sometimes referred to as refractive lens exchange (RLE), is a type of refractive procedure that involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one to achieve sharper focus. Although rarely performed (less than 1 percent of all refractive surgeries), it is a viable option for some candidates, especially those patients with early cataracts that eventually could worsen and cloud the lens anyway and patients with a high degree of nearsightedness (myopia)—greater than 8 diopters (a unit of measure of the optical power of a lens). It’s also used in select patients with a high degree of farsightedness (hyperopia)—greater than 4 diopters.
